What happened here!!!?

Maybe bloat.

Did you quarantine it?
And add the tank water from the tank it was to go into gradually.
Sometimes there are latent bacteria already in your tank, that your older fish have become immune to, but the new ones aren't.
This helps acclimatize the new fish to the new bacterial environment gradually, allowing it to build up immunity.

Quarantined for 1.5 weeks in a bucket with air stone. Did a drop to acclimate tonparameters the. Added to tank

I quarantine for 3 months, adding about a quart of water from the main tank daily, as part of water changes.
A friend who runs an aquatic exhibit at a zoo, quarantines for at east 6 months.
I realize most people do a week or 2 (or maybe a month) then drop into a tank. To me this is not long enough for most diseases to manifest symptoms, and why many tanks get wiped out with"no" apparent reason.
Sorry to be blunt, but the reality of wiping out an entire community tank is just too much of a gamble to me.

I can see that. And I have the ability to do that. Thanks for the tip
