Tonight has been a..different night.Today was my friends b-day,and he is an owner of an lfs.we have been friends since high school. So he was giving a few of his "special" co-workers and friends cool little fishies. But he didn't give me any "cool little fishies".Instead,he gave me a big fish! Before I tell you what,I only have two tanks, because I've had to give away two(my 30 and 55,including the fish). So I only have my 180 and 800(both SW).Anyway,he gave me...oh mfkers please don't hate me...a blacktip shark.Trust me,I refused it at first, but due to some complications(I would prefer not to list what) I took it.Now I had done some research on these guys,so it's not new to me.I don't have a 30,000 gallon tank! And how will I relocate this monster? No one is going to want one,and public aquariums around here certainly don't even have the right setups for this species. He is about 18".He is swimming right now.And I don't want to kill this beauty.Anyway,my question is:How long could he last in this tank?I'll see if anyone with a tank to house this beast around the area will take him.But for the time being,he is in my 800 gallon.Help me :(

sorry!I don't have a digital camera...I only have a camera that goves the pic right after it's taken.I know....

Measurements of tank? Is it eating? Watch ammonia levels like a hawk.
I will need to go somewhere fast.
Shoot me a PM with info about where you are located and I'll see if I can work something out for a place for it ASAP.

PICS!!!

It's hard to tell how long you will be able to keep it without knowing the tank's dimensions.

But off hand I would guess - if your lucky maybe a couple of months.

Yeah - Blacktip Reefs will need a tank/pond of at least 700 sq.ft. and 25-30,000 gallons for life. But these are for adults. Still to keep the pup til it reachs maturity (at about 3.5 ft), you would need a pond of at least 250 sq.ft and at least 6,000-6,600 gallons. But that would likely only give you about 2-3 years before it would need a tank for an adult.

Likely your best bet - find a new home for it - A.S.A.P.

He didn't say it was a Blacktip Reef, he just said 'Blacktip Shark'. Hmm... Could be either, I guess? Surely you have a friend with a digital camera, or even a neighbour? I'm sure we'd all love to see pics before you get rid of him :) Good luck.

Yeah,I'm trying. An office around here has an aquarium of 28,000 gallons.Would that work?I really don't think I can keep this guy.HOWEVER!It is eating silversides and squid.

Agreed - it would all depend on the exact dimension of the 28,000 gallon tank. Also it depends on the exact shape of the tank, and if the tank has sharp corners or rounded ones. Rounded corners are better than sharp. But best of all is a Round or Oval shaped tank/pond - since these have no corners.

Hmmm - Not really. Generally when someone is talking about a Blacktip Shark in terms of private aquaria or LFS - they usually mean the Blacktip Reef (Carcharhinus melanopterus). The Blacktip Shark (C. limbatus) is a completely different animal when it comes to captivity - it's a very high strung species that doesn't tend to do well even in public aquariums, and is virtually unheard of in private aquariums.
