Oil Slick?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A couple of ways of getting rid of it is skimming the surface with a python when you are doing a water change, or get a dry sponge and drop it in your tank and let it float around the surface for a while and it will soak it up, or drop in a piece of paper towel then quickly remove it and repeat till it is all gone...

I dont remember everything that causes it but I do know a couple of reasons are over feeding and lack of surface agitation...

ya Lack of surface aggitation will cause an oily film to form on the surface of the water, its actually protiens in the water. Skimming will get rid of them also a power head aggitating the water surface will break them up and keep them from forming.

Did you have a fish die recently?

just put in a tupperware container, bottom first. then slowly sink it so water from the surface of your tank slowly spills into the tupperware. that's how i skim the surface of my tanks. works like a charm

nope

Probably overfeeding, usually the raw shrimp stay at the bottom for several hours before it get consume by the paroon shark..

That would be my guess too.

Agree with all the above, protien film on wwater due to leftover organics breaking down. It needs surface agitation to keep the film from reforming. I used the papertowel method to remove it when it happened to me.

I used to have the same problem. redirected the return jets from my sump to give more surface aggitation. No more film!
