After many nudges from Bobby... I'm finally here :-P
I'm fairly new to photography.... ok VERY new !!! I have a crappy camera to say the least ... 5400 coolpix...

I refuse to settle for poopy shots though ;) even though I know my camera limits me just a tad... so I need everyones help.

Most of my shots are of tang cichlids.

I'm located in Maryland.... near DC (Very close to Bobby... frightning isn't it ? lol jk Bobby ).

Can't wait for you guys to tear my photos to shedds :-P

I know nothing of "photo talk" so please explain things to me in a very simple way... you know like a 2 year old !!! lol ... at least till I get the hang of it.

Here is probably the best shot I've been able to take so far....

DSCN1849.jpg

So as you can tell I need some help :)

About time you showed up. :-o

Hey folks, Sarah is very active in the cichlid community in our area. She introuduced me to the Capital Cichlid Association (Francine aka MsCichlid is the current president) where she is a highly respected member. She is also a mod over at CF, as are a few other members here.

She's tough, so you can let her have it good with the critique.

Sarah, feel welcomed here. And post a lot of pix.

I took that shot a while ago... I never save my originals either... I guess i should start so you guys can help me better :-D

I did sharpen this photo a tad I think... if I remember correctly. The "sparkles"... well they have that in real life.... so i guess I really don't know how to help that?

Thanks for the welcome u2 :)

Welcome to the forum, Sarah. Nice picture of a beautiful fish to introduce yourself with. :)

The sparkles/iridescent coming off the flanks are the results of the direct flash (can also tell from the shadow). Might want to try to diffuse the flash a bit (see CaroL posts on the results that she's getting with just using some tissue papers).

Looking forward to some more great pictures as I become edumacated in African cichlids (been a long time since I've kept any).

Welocme to the forum Sarah.

Good first shot to post and looking foward to some more.

My thoughts on the photo if I were being critical are...

Its a bit over sharpened
The lower potrion of the photograph background could benefit from a clean-up
The some sparking spots down the sides seem a bit overexposed. A diffused flash may help reduce this.

Cheers

Rich

Welcome Sarah.
Xenotilapia are lovely fishes, but not the easiest ones to photograph (or to keep and breed either). You're right about the blue flashes on the flanks of spilopterus (if I've got the right name) - it is hard to get the lighting right to show the fish the way our eyes see it. You've not done badly at all.
