thank you

The best setup for a begginer with Ps IMO opinion is a 75 gallon with two emp 400s for filtration and a nice strong powerhead. I never kept too much stuff in my tank because I felt it was important for the fish not to hide all the time and to get use to seeing me because reds are naturally skittish fish, but drift wood with live java fern attached is a simple, practical aquarium decoration. Gravel and sand can either be used. I prefer sand b/c it looks better and is easier to clean because with a powerhead the crap will just pile up in a corner and you can then easily syphon it out.

Start with 5 small 1-3" reds and as they grow some may get eaten or if you were lucky as I was you can grow all five out to a nice size and once they are about 7" pick the best 3 and sell the other 2. The 75 will be a perfect home for 3 RBP for life.

For feeding it is best to mainly feed shell on shrimp as you will tend to get the best color. It is also important to provide a varied diet. Say 60% shell one shrimp and let fresh white fish (cat fish, tilapia, cod ect), nightcrawlers, and squid make up the other 40% Stay away from feeders and anything from a mammal such as ground beef.

That kind of covers it in a nutshell

Good luck!

feeder gold fish is good. fun to watch... fish also get some exercise. My friend feeds his with strips of beef and pork and squid.... no problem.... fish have been living like that for almost 2 yrs now.

Hiya Miss Smith, welcome to MFK.
The problem with beef, pork, and lamb, is that if the piranha eat to high a percentage of it they build up fatty deposits and can get liver problems, a little bit now and then doesn't hurt.

feeders are NOT good. they will not harm your fish if you feed them once in a while, but is not a good staple. feeders contain anti vitamins, and it will eventually lead to unhealthier Ps.
i dont necessarily agree with the beef and pork, but the squid seems fine.

also, a general rule for Ps is, 20 gallons per fish.

I feed my fish a varied diet of cichlid pellets, squid, raw shrimp and every once in a while a feeder.
