I just wanted to get your input on how many female Dovii you went through before you got a pair. I woke up this morning and realized I had made a sacrifice to the spawning gods and didnt even know it. I introduced a 4-5" female Red Devil/Dovii cross to my male 6-7" Dovii and with in 12 hours she is no longer with us. Ok I jumped the gun a little, she is still techincally with us in a hospital tank(but my guess is not for long).

Thanks for the feedback guys/gals.

how big of a tank are we talking about here? I would not even try to attempt that in anything below 6 feet long. Your Dovii sees the whole tank as his territory so he'll eliminate all fish that you are trying to introduce. Next time put a divider in the tank and let the fish see each other for a couple of weeks. Then cut a hole in the divider that only the smaller female can pass through that way she can come and go as she wants if he gets to rough.

That allways sucks. It is deffenitly a difficult proccess pairing up such bad ass sob fish. And even if they do pair. Breeding still will be the test. Good luck

I have always started with juveniles or introduced them all together.
Try using a divider like mentioned above or pull the male out, rearrange the tank, introduce the female or two, then put the male back in. (after about 5hrs or so)
Dovii are very smart & not easily fooled - IMO But this may work.

best solution is to make sure the female is significantly smaller than your male so she can hide and escape the male in case he goes on a rampage. I have bred plenty of dovii and this has always worked for me. Once you can get past the 1st breeding it should be a lot easier and less worry some although w/ dovii you always have to keep an eye on them.

If he was the only fish in the tank you may never be able to put another fish in there. You will have to be very lucky to find a female that he will accept at first sight. I say plan on just enjoying him.
