Hello all,
So my tank has been up for about 2 1/2 months, (125 gallon with 2 AC110s and a RENA XP3 cannister, overkill but with the volume of fish I felt it was neccessary). When the water conditions were right I started introducing fish, started with 4 and eventually got to 7 total fish. 1 10" silver arowana, 1 small oscar, 1 small clown knife, 2 med sized angels, 6" Motoro stingray and last but not least a 4" Retic stingray. I didnt put them all in at one time, I started with the aro and the angels, a week later added the clown and the teacup, then a week later added the motoro and the oscar. Out of nowhere I am having an ammonia issue. I have tried everything to get rid of it, 30 gallon water changes every day, added ammo chips to the rena and one of the ac110s, Ive used Stresszyme, AM guard, prime, ammo lock and api ammo remover and its still there. I have also limmited the feeding. The rays eat 1 serving of blackworms once a day, what they dont eat the others finish off. I hand feed the aro (thats kinda fun lol) and once a day I put a small pinch of flakes in for the angels. My point is Im not over feeding and there is no food leftover in the tank. I have been keeping fish for a total of about 10 years and I have never delt with this before, IM FRUSTRATED and Im really worried it might start hurting the fish. The funny thing is, this has been going on for about 2 weeks and the fish have shown NO effects of ammonia poisoning whatsoever but its only a matter of time before they do. Can anyone give me any idea what Im doing wrong?? As far as I know Im doing everything by the book but nothing works!!! Please help!!!!

I don't think you're filtration is overkill at all. What type of test kit are you using? You should get in the habit of doing larger water changes. I do 50% two to three times a week on my tank.

Lets start with ^.

Not sure what that means:screwy:.

"If" you tank was cycled, your tank's BB is going through a ammonia spike because your BB has never seen this much poo before.

How did you cycle your tank?

How did you know it was cycled?

Keep doing water changes dailey as you are doing and you should get a reading of 0 ammonia eventually. But the fun does not stop there, oh no. Now when you get your Nitrite reading and this will come, your tank will be very toxic to fish since Nitrite is a lethal toxic and ammonia is just toxic.

I would cut back on feeding daily. Do it sparingly since you do not have enough BB to convert NH3-->NO2-->NO-3

Adding x5 prime will help with nitrite and adding salt will also help.

Good Luck.

lol

The filtration is not overkill
The stock list is pretty heavy for 125
Time will take care of it you're re-cycling

you might also check your source water for ammonia.. just a thought. doing huge water changes with water that already has ammonia in it is counter productive. Believe me i found out the hard way.

just another thing to check, by no means is it the cure for your problem. IMO you are overstocked and your tank has to cycle all over again.

i would go to the LFS and buy some of that Tetra safe start, or whatever it's called with the bio-spira in it. a couple big bottles should do the trick. even when i cycle a tank properly (mostly i just clone tanks and use established media in the new tank) before adding fish i add a bottle or two of this stuff to prevent the situation you are facing now.
