I've currently moved on all my fish except my oscars, so I went down the LFS to get something nice for my tank :naughty: , ended up spotting a baby rtc , i was speaking to the bloke there for ages deciding if i should get him, also brought up about the redtail they have had in the shop for 26 years (ive been goin in there for about 8 years now), he had stopped growing around 28"-30" long they feed him once a week about ten jumbo king prawns, and he has stopped that size for years, but ive been reading up on information about them and saying the largest ever caught was 97 pounds in weight and was 5 foot long, but how meany redtails do you no in a tank over 3 foot ive been telling my self and after looking on here, i only found three that are over 3 foot and the two were in a huge pond.

So ive invested in one, and i will be trying what the pet shop trys when he gets around 12 inch slow the feeding down too about two times a week then at 15"-18" go to once a week and thats how they did it and im going to see if i can do the same, currently i have a 4x2x2 (just got it yesterday, still need to set it up),then start putting money away for a 6 or 7 foot x 30" x 3ft (W), and see how that works out for me if not ill upgrade i have no kids , and just a mortgage and a well payed job, so i belive i can do this LOL.

Anyway the rtc is 2"-3" cost me 40 pounds for him, not that much of a bad price , ive just got 2 oscars with him that are 8" and 12" , im growing the redtail up in a diffrent tank, so he dosent become a snack, i dont think i will be adding anything eles as the room will be tight when he/she is around two foot long.

thanks for reading any good comments welcome.

RTC are some awsome fish. The only reason i never got one is due to the size they get. Nice pick up and Good luck.

I want one bad! I want more than one even more badly lol Do they do well in groups?

No, often they can bully each other and housing a single fish is hard, let alone more.

As our friend here will soon find out, filtering a small tank with a red tail in is a huge problem due to lack of water volume becoming unstable with such a large bio load....2or 3 would be very hard indeed.

hmmm Im thinking of building an outdoor tropical pond. I though it would be cool to have a RTC but I know they dont play well with others. So I was hoping 2 or 3. I will have reassess how big I can build and what I can accommodate.

I just love how surprised they always look, 0.0
If I had the money to get a good big tank, I would have one in an instant

Let me talk from personal experience...its a little stressful cuz they want to eat your other fish. I have a lima catfish and the RTC just starting to bully him a little. But when I first introduced the RTC to the tank, he went up to the lima's tail and tried to put it in his mouth and he did it again (2weeks later). Then I also have a royal pleco and he pushes him around and goes at his body with his mouth, he's trying to eat him. So yeah, they are cool fish, especially when they get older cuz they change colors and whatnot but they are garbage disposals literally and will eat your fish when they get big enough :(. I fed him 3x in one day frozen beefheart and he's still hungry. Thats why im going to give him 2 days to change his attitude and if he doesnt, i'll return him. I love my RTC, he has changed his color and his fins are more spread out, absolutely beautiful, he's my dog in a fish tank, but when u start messing around with my other fish, he's outta the tank. I wont have the other fish be stressed or eaten.
