In The Little Town Of Bedrock!
Recently, (today) i lost all but 1 fish in my 55 gallon and ive since moved him into the "planned to be" tank for a red finned wolf fish. I wont start the whole story again but if u would like to read it heres a link; http://ovas.ca/index.php?topic=20685.0

So yea, once ive ripped down the 55 and cleaned it all out im thinking of setting it up in some other form, the African theme looked beautiful but was to costly, i would have lost 137 dollars worth of fish in that tank if the bichir hadn't made it. So ideas for a future tank, what would you do? what could look nice? any ideas are welcome, this would be a lifetime tank so no upgrades in the future.

Thanks,
Spencer

Im sorry to hear that. I understand why the bircher lived tho. You could do plecos. Like L-134, and L-260.

Yea I agree with plecos.. I looooveee plecos, but just gotta watch their sizes and how territorial they get. i have 4 in my tank around din din time they get violent.. try to suck battle!! so yea.. umm if your worried bout price get some like convicts or somethin.. I always love the electric blues with the electric yellows. and of course my all time favorite jack dempseys. my brothers got a 55 hes got some convicts, electric blues, plecos and a pike. like if your worried bout cost dont get anythin that needs special feeding. and if alll else make it a super friendly tank with like some type of tetra or somethin. Sorry couldnt be more helpful

Well Id personally do a female convict, a firemouth, and a severum. With maybe a few bristle nose plecos, and a trio of silver dollars.

Sorry all you pleco fans but i wont risk having a fish that could eat the slime coat of my bichir, to much money involved in that little bugger = P I was thinking maybe make it some type of predatory tank? or possibly some type of semi-aggresive fish. Cichlids would easilly fill that idea of aggresiveness but there was this one fish i liked the look of at petcetera yesterday, It reminded of a gar but without the longsnout, it had a narrow arrow like shaped body, beautifully coloured, hints of green, red, blue and yellow, Its mouth was slightly long and quite wide almost the diameter of a penny also the fish was only about 3-5 inchs long if that.

I relize thats a vade description but maybe someone could give me some names that it reminds them of and i could do a little search and say yes or no to?

I was considering making it a african cichlid tank with the bichir in there but i dont care to much for the african lake tanks, they always appear to crowed to me. Maybe i could make it a green terror tank with the bichir in there? one more thing for ideas, comminuty tank is pretty much a no no, the bichir could get to 14 inches long and will eat most smaller fish.

Thanks,
Spencer

Can you explain to me as to why the bichir lived? Im honestly drawing a blank other then that he could have just been breathing air from the top of the tank.

Spencer

Since you said it is/most likely is a oxygen deprivation, I realized he lived because birchers breathe thru their gills and thru their mouths, to get astmospheric oxygen. So Im thinking the bircher was able to grab enough air out of the atmosphere to survive.

Quick Question, what do i with my sand substrate? throw it out and buy new sand or what? Is there anyway i could just pour some water with chlorine in it into the tank with the sand and let that sit for a while and then fill it up again? or just fill it completly with tap water unconditioned and let that kill everything in there? then after maybe a day lets say i add conditioner and then i have a fresh start? oh just buy new everything and do that? I think im gonna add some more sand anyways because i dont have enough for my liking will that do anything? one more thing, if i just washed the filter media in tap water would that get rid of the possible chemical or would it just kill the BB and wash out gunk?

Well it turns out its more then alot more then one question but they need to be answered hopefully today because i have no homework so today is the perfect day to do this but tommorow im gonna be busy then i have school all week.

Sorry to hear about the loss. That's gotta be tough.

I would definitely go with some fish who can take care of themselves, and grow to a good size. Get a handful of medium sized new world Cichlids that catch your eye.
