Just got a new camera:) This is the fish that was sold to me as a Red Terror. So, is it?

I'm gonna say the bar right behind the gill doesn't look to be connected to the Bar behind it making a Y so No my opinion you have A Mayan :) I have one in my 150 Right now. A RT has the distinct Y bar connection. :)

Very common to mistake one for the other. Unless you've done your reading :)

Great, I have three of these fish, one in the main tank and two in a grow out tank.

I can't find a true red terror anywere, except two places online. Of course, I need to order $50 - $100 worth of fish not including the shipping.:swear:

nice mayan

Sorry about that newtothis, but do keep looking - festaes are superb fish. Intelligent, spunky little super cichlids.

I don't know about mayans though, never owned one.

Well, the Mayan doesn't seem like such a bad fish. I did a quick search on google, they look alright as adults, but nothing looks as good as a full grown female feaste!

The one in my 75 actually is a pretty personable little fish now. Always checking me out when I get near the tank and holding it's own with the convict and firemouth. The ones in the QT are a little duller and beat up. They are separated with a divider because they go into death match mode as soon as they spot each other.

I'll keep looking, but I think in the end I'll just have to order a Red Terror online (if I can find one from a place that doesn't require a $50 to $100 min. order.)

Whenever you want to order a red terror, specify to the LFS that you want amphilophus festae. Otherwise, you will most likely get a Mayan cichlid and be really disappointed.
