Any reason I couldn't use this filter that came with the tank for my SW setup? The tank was originally an all-in-a-box freshwater setup, but I switched it to SW before I set it up and the filter hasn't been used at all.
You can use it, but I'd beef up your filtration for saltwater, if you haven't already. Even on small tanks, I usually put in at least 1.5 lbs per gallon cured live rock, shallow sand bed bottom, protein skimmer and/or refugium (all HOT for tanks 55 gallons and under). And a HOT power filter; (I run them usually for surface circulation, add charcoal or other chemical filtration only as needed.)
my only problem is that topfins SUCK... the one good thing they can be used for is a Deep Sand Bed fuge.. they have a lot of space away formt eh pump you can use to fill with sand.. if you can get a tiny light to clip on the top you can grow some ceatomorph and make a proper fuge...

I put 2 pieces of LR from the tank in it and got it started today. Hopefully the added flow over those pieces of LR will make for some decent filtration.
My only concern right now is that I've got the cover over the filter so no light gets in there at all. I'm wondering if I should leave the cover off until I get the right kind of light?
And if someone could make a suggestion on the light to get, that's be HUGE!
are you trying to make the filter a fuge? or give the LR in the filter some light?
if it's LR as a filter meadia it doesn't need any light
if you're trying to make it a fuge with some macro algea, a small clip on lights (like for those betta cups) would work nice, but they also make small PC lights for 2.5 gallons and for mini aqualights
ITs a 20 gallon tank and I've had the filter above running for about a month now with just LR in it - essence a mini-fuge. My nitrates have dropped to 15-20 so the fish are happier now.
This setup worked great since the filter came with the tank (it was an all-in-one kit) so the total cost was $0. One day I may add a light and some algae, but the tank is moving to our office so the less clutter on it, the better.
