Today me and my friend went to the LFS and there was an 11inch Silver that was beat badly, Its barbs were gone and the fins looked very ragged, and it was skinny but had a tall body, just looked very mistreated. I want to get him cause the people there think hes in great condition, and as you know, from the description its been neglected.

How agressive are silvers toward eachother in a tank? I currently have an 8 inch silver, in a 100 gal, my tank is 18inches deep so he can still cope for a while,

Hes in a 20gallon right now, at the store.

they usually don't get along very well together with just 2. having a bigger tank helps too.

Man that sucks, thats the main reason i bought the one i got now, he was in a tank getting beat up by the other fish with nipped fins and damaged barbs!

Honestly, imo, you shouldn't buy fish with the intent to rescue from stores that neglect their fish, whether it be a lfs or a chain store like wal-mart. They best way to save fish is to not spend your money in the store. If you buy their fish, they make a profit, so it gives them more incentive to continue selling them because they know that even if the fish is in terrible condition, they will still be able to sell it. Once you go save a fish, another will just take its place. You have to force the store to decide to take care of their stock or risk losing their own money through dead fish. Sounds harsh, but thats how its got to be done.
