For bacterial infection:
Usually happened to a ropefish when they damaged itself after doing a death roll. Face rotting. Start from the tip of the mouth or lips and bacteria continue to the rest of the face if left untreated. I got 5 cases of this already. It will only took 3 days for the bacteria to kill the victim. From 5 victims only 1 survived. The bacteria probably went to the brain as well and shutting the fish down. As the first 2 days the fish act normal and doesn't show any signs of getting weak, except at the 3rd day. At the 3 day, it will only take a few hours and the fish is dead.

As for male and female sizes. I may have to disagree with you that female grow bigger than females.

Most female bichir are thicker but most of them can't reach the length of most male which grow longer than most females.

For example, my female albino senegal will only get up to 9" max, while my male albino max out at 10". The same thing with my regular senegalus. Male at 13"+ and female at 11"+. Same goes with my endlicheris. Males went to 21"+ and females more likely 18-20".
