after doing my own research and turning up rather empty handed im turning to the brain trust (mfk's best and brightest) for some answers. id like to replace the hagen fluval 3 plus internal filter im using on my 29 gallon for something a little less visible as well as easier to get to and work on; after looking at the different types of filters (internal, HOB, sump, canister, sponge, under gravel) iv decided a HOB should fit the bill of what i want... if i can ever find one that does and has everything i want. this is a list of characteristics i want in a HOB:

1. self priming in case of a power outage while im away on vacation or something
2. adjustable flow rate in case i want to keep a betta again and dont want to wash him back to Thailand
3. quite it's right next to my bed... nuff said
4. engineered to last, tough design as i tend to neglect my filters and expect them to keep going forever anyway
5. lifetime warranty
6. max flow rate of 150 USg/hour i would prefer something more like 250 but i know that it will be fine either way
7. plenty of room for filtration media because after all... it is a filter

anybody know of a HOB filter that does all this?

aquaclear

Nope..
Sorry, there is NO filter that meets all on your list.
Quiet and HOB just don`t mesh.
Even one that is quiet for awhile is rare.
If I was you, I would look to a canister for all your needs.

Aquaclears are my favorite....but not self priming. They don't ALWAYS come back on after power outage without a couple cups of water thrown in.

Yea, you can scratch off Aquaclear 110 HOB in the self priming stuff. After the power is turned off for a while and then turned back on, the HOB would need some water put inside the HOB for it to operate.

How should I know? Well I own three Aqualcear 110s and everytime I do a water change, I shut off the power for a while.

I have an Aqua Clear 1200 that I bought @ 1984...still going strong. It needs to be primed after an outage, but my Whisper 200 restarts every time, and it's actually quieter.

Hmm, my AC110s and AC70s always self prime after a water change. The only time they don't is if I remove them, clean out media, etc. Then I have to add a cup of water as the other member mentioned. Both of mine are silent as well. They are bullet proof in my opinion and the best HOB filter around. One drawback is I don't see the variable flow system doing all that much...all the way open and slowed completely down really doesn't look like much difference.

OP...I have two AC70s on a 29g. There is no noticable "over agitation". I feel very confident in saying that though AC may not meet everyone of your parameters, but you can't and won't go wrong with AC :)

Good luck...
