He just killed the second female I gave him. I guess I'll try my luck with convicts some time in the future, and I'll get guppies soon. But I don't know what to do with my male convict...

What size tank do you have them in? You have to provide alot of hiding spots, or even a divider. Try keeping them seperate until the female is ready to breed.

10 gallon, I know it's a little small. There are two rocks, but the male occupies those, so the female usually hides near the filter or the heater. Thanks for your advice, maybe when I try cons again I'll get a divider or something, but all these dying females is really getting to me. I think it's the male. Once I release the female out of the bag, he just tried to kill her.

have you ever thought of trading that male and starting from scratch with a few smaller 1s??

Yes actually, but on this forums, I got the message that the same thing might happen, and to stick with the male. I think I could just get a new pair, but in all 3 of my lfstores, I think they are actually out of sexually mature females. And I really don't want to risk another death.

That is his territory, and a small one at that. So any fish that enters his territory will be chased away, since there is nowhere to run, it is killed. It is not the male, it is the circumstances you have created. The only chance you would have with this setup is with a divider. Once the famale is ready to spawn you can remove the divider.

Don't trade them for more cons. You are definately going to be in the same situation if you do so. Anyways try Bolivian Rams. I think I am going to take a swing at them as well because my LFS just got some nice species in. Does anyone know if they will breed with a German Ram?

:irked: Why would you want them too? They will cross breed, as they are both SA cichlids, and are relatively similar. Try to keep them from crossbreeding though if it can be helped...;). Cupids are pretty, peaceful dwarfs, and are among some of the easier fish to spawn...:D.

Nabbig2, you need to stop adding females, or any fish for that matter. That male convict will just continue to keep killin whatever you put in with it. Gettin a larger tank is imperative for your success. Unless you get one, its going to be very difficult for you to get them to breed. Even if you just upgraded to a 20gal tank, that size alone would make a world of difference. The best bet for you though, would be to get rid of your male, and just get a large group of young cons., then raise them up together. It may take a little time, but patience is often rewarded. Or you could move the male to a larger tank, then get several of the younger females and grow them up in the 10gal. Once they get large enough, add ALL of them to the tank that the male is in. That way the aggression will be spread out and he'll be able to choose a mate of his own accord.
