Hello folks I just picked up a 110 gallon tank on Craigslist for 50 bucks. Anywho I know the tank had a crack. And was patched up well, now my issue is I'm resealing the tank walls, I have scraped the silicone off all the sides but the bottom edges seem to run deeper almost along theside edge of the bottom panel as i can feel the edge of the glass with my nail all the way around. Does anyone know if I could try to scrap it off too (I think it'l take forever to do) or should I just seal it over all around a see what happens
I know it the picture it doesn't look flush to the glass but I can't get deeper than that without it getting uneven and too close to the seam1513655968255710943493.jpg 1513656040849430768683.jpg

So, the silicone between the glass is what's holding it together, the stuff on the outside is just buffer and water proofing.

If the silicone is bad you really shouldnt just scrape off the visible stuff and put on a new layer - you really should go down to bare glass panes and start over. Otherwise you are risking a catastrophic blow out in my opinion.

Okay thank you, my problem is this is an old tank built in 1991, I just don't see how I'm going to be able to get a razor blade down there in between the bottom panel and the sides peices? In the pictures above the silicone is flat even with the bottom galss. In all the videos I've watched none have had a bottom like mine

it's doable, but I'm not good at it. I've had some older tanks that i was throwing away. I tried to disassemble them for fun. i have not been very successful.

if you do a full reseal/rebuild, look at buying new plastic trim pieces for the top and bottom. the trim always seem to break for me during a tear down.

the new trim (or old trim i guess) acts like a jig to help hold the glass when you put it back together. use a good silicone. rtv 100 series is a good one. there's a difference between adhesives and sealants.

I had a super old aqueon 75 that leaked from the bottom. i did a quick hackjob reseal on the interior seams. I got lucky and it held, but I was really happy when I replaced it. i patched it up 6 years ago. it's still leak free at a friends house. your mileage may vary. if you do it the easy way, put it somewhere that you won't be devastated if it leaks.
