Old Cemeteries
A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.
And, one who can enjoy browsing old cemeteries.
Some fascinating things are inscribed on old tombstones!

(Nowadays it would cost a small fortune to put poems like these on a headstone)

Harry Edsel Smith of Albany, New York
Born 1903--Died 1942.
Looked up the elevator shaft to see if the
car was on the way down. It was.

In a cemetery in England:

Remember man, as you walk by,
As you are now, so once was I
As I am now, so shall you be.
Remember this and follow me.

[To which someone replied by writing
on the tombstone:

To follow you I'll not consent,

Until I know which way you went.]

A couple more i found

He got a fish-bone in his throat
and then he sang an angel note.
Schenectady, New York

She was not smart, she was not fair,
But hearts with grief for her are swellin';
All empty stands her little chair:
She died of eatin' water-mellon.

In a New Jersey cemetery

Rebecca Freeland
1741
She drank good ale,
good punch and wine
And lived to the age of 99.

Beneath this stone, a lump of clay,
Lies stingy Jimmy Wyatt.
Who died one morning just at ten
And saved a dinner by it.

Falkirk, England

1690
Here lie the bones of Joseph Jones
Who ate while he was able.
But once overfed, he dropt down dead
And fell beneath the table.
When from the tomb, to meet his doom,
He arises amidst sinners.
Since he must dwell in heaven or hell,
Take him - whichever gives the best dinners.

I love going through old cemeteries. I used to have competitions when I was younger to see who could find the oldest grave.
