I am currently setting up some of my parents old tanks that have not been used for 10 years or so...if some of the old filters have (presumably) dead algae in them, will they harm the fish? I've tried to rinse off the algae best I can but th stuff is tenacious and frequently in impossible to reach places within the filter.

Thanks!

soak it in water. most of it will come loose.

I would not worry about old encrusted algae - it will most likely break down over time when exposed to moisture again. Algae in general is not harmful to fish. I would just make sure that it is not clogging the filter or causing any mechanical problems.
