So I was looking through some of my fish pics and I ran accross some old pics of a FH I lost to an illness that I could not identify by web research or via LFS owners/works (was not appart of MFK at the time. I didnt even know this comunity existed yet). He past away after what seemed to be a painfull but well fought month long illness. He was by far one of my favorit fish. I bring this up now so I can be better prepaired for this type of illness if it ever happens to any of my fish again.

It started out as just a small bump one night right between his nostrols below his kok. The next morning it was hugh and had a white growth on part of it (shown on piture one). He was still eating at this stage.

The next picture is a few days later and it shows that the white growth spread further around the enlarged area and white fungus looking growths started coming of of his nostrels. Still eating though not as agresively

The next stage was about a week and a half after the start of all this. It shows the white growth growing outward, and kinda looked like cotten. It would fall off in peaces. He would "huff" kinda like tried to run water through his sinuses and white stuff would come out of the infected area. At this point it was obvious to me that the area had become an open sore and had reached his sinuses. He stoped eating at this point.

About 3 weeks in the entire cap of the wound feel off and as you can see in the picture there was an open sore that seemed to go strait back. I could not tell how far. At this point obviously still not eating but now also lathargic and sitting at the bottom of the tank. A few days later he pasted away. He hung on though it for about a month.:cry:

I tried gram neg and positve treatments, I did numerous large amount water changes, I tried high salt, 86 degree water temp. I had him for about a year in his own tank never had remotly bad water conditions. He eat pellets, freeze dried krill, some times market shrimp. I never feed him anything live for fear of somthing like this. The only thing that I could think of is a few months before this I had fish in one of my other tanks that got beat up badly so I devided the FHs tank and put the beat up fish in the other half. Let him heal up and then gave it to a freind (that fish never got sick), opened the tank back up and with in weeks, bamb sickness. I was at a loss and very sadend :(:cry:. At any rate this was about 2 years ago so my memory is a little cloudy. Now that I am appart of this awesome comunity I thought I might take this oppertunity to find out what the hell that beast of an illness was. If anyone could enlighten me on what this was it would be greatly appriciated

Thanks for the input. I looked up Glugea and it sounds like this could have been the issue. This is the first time I've ever hear of Glugea but from what I read on it, it sounds like my FH was doomed from the onset.:(

Rob I started keeping fish on and off in the late 1960's and I can tell you that there are about 2 to 3 times as many Effed up diseases out there now than there ever have been. I don't know if it's because of inbreeding generation after generation of species or disease mutation or whatever but the stuff out there today is so much harder to diagnose and get rid of that you almost have to have a P.H.D. in Ichthiology. I mean it's freaking incredible anymore. About the only disease that you had to worry about 20 or so years ago was the Bloat and there wasn't much of that around. Anything else you got could be cured with some Maryson or some other local generic fish medication. Anymore it's a Freeking nightmare. :nilly:

Thanks for taking the time to explain some of this to me. I realy appreciate it!
