This might come off as a dumb question but I am just wondering something. Are reptiles like dogs and cats where as they get older they can start to have problems with mobility and such? The only reason I ask is I have noticed my big iguana starting to have some issues, while he was never real graceful to begin with because of previous issues before I got him. But he is having trouble moving and climbing, he can still do it but it’s a struggle for him. Nothing else has changed with him. He still has an amazing appetite and is still very alert, just not moving as well as he was.

Should I account this to old age? I have had him for 10 years now I think? And he was already pretty big when I got him, I estimate at least 4 or 5. So is this just him getting older? Or could there be some other problem?

And if this is an old age issue I am going to have to rethink his enclosure set up. I don’t want to risk him having to climb up real high if he doesn’t have good footing. I would like to make him as comfortable as I can. In a month or so my girl and myself are going to be moving to a new apartment under a friend of mine(the one who helps me build my cages and such) and he said that he is willing to help me build a new cage for him. So I am thinking about keeping the same length and width but making the enclosure shorter. So instead of the 5 feet tall that it is now I am thinking of making it only 2.5 feet high and making his basking shelf wider but only a foot or so off of the ground, and then build the rhinos new cage under it. So my big guy will have the illusion that he is up higher than he actually is. Does this seem like a good idea to you guys?

That could very well be from old age. Every thing breaks down a bit as it ages and you said problems before you got him so thats also a likely cause for decreased mobility as well.
I am curious now though if common joint supplements like glucosamine and chondroiton are safe for herps... Interesting topic that has not really been discussed before

i figured i would post it because i dont often read to much about this issue.

i have thoguht about joint supplements ad such but would be very wary of doing it since igg are very supseptible(sp?) to kidney and liver issues so i dont want to over do it.

i am still holding out that he will make a miraculous come back like he has done before. but i know that one time he just isnt going to get better.

its ok i still love him and he gets a nice neck rub every morning and night.

They can develop calcium deposits as they get older. He should be feelong fine if he eats well and id alert. It's kinda like arthritis.

Letting them soak in warm water seems to help.

Its normal Mike dont worry. It is also very important to give food high in water to keep him nicely hidrated.
