i was worken on my 150 doing a water change. i have my 48" light that sits right on glass, ya the glass gets hot but i figured its fine. but lucky for me i was down there, the glass just shattered into about a dozen pices and the bigger heavy pie that was razor sharp almost hit my ray, def would have killed him, missed him by an inch no lie, that and i caught the light b4 it went in. is it ok that i have my light right on glass,, i thoght it would have been fine. i hope ace hadwear has g;ass they can cut for me, anyone know of a good place to get a cheap pice of glass cut bc right now i have a bin over the top and i cant turn on light bc it will melt it. thanks for any advice, anyone know how this could have happened or wher to get a new pices of glass

close call.
my buddys glass top did the same from his new light he put on.but bought a new piece and it never happened again.
looks ugly but put your light on 2x4's on each side or make homemade light stands.

sry i have a local glass guy, dont know anyone in wash.GL

glad to hear the ray is safe

i saw somewhere that lowes does glass cutting in some areas u might want to look into that

id hit up your local hardware store and just get some glass cutters. shouldnt be no more than $5. its pretty easy to do. just run the cutting wheel straight across where you want it cut a few times and then tap the glass. there you go. im sure youll find it that easy. good luck and close call!

ya lowes still cuts glass. so all is well and this time i lift the light up off glass just to be safe

3/8" acrylic is cheaper to buy and much easier to shape for your tank. It's less prone to shattering and IF is did shatter (Cant see it happening though), it wouldnt be sharp enough to cause lots of damage.

and it will sag.

I have the light in my 6 foot propped on small pieces of wood approx 1" thick. I'd prefer higher but there is not enough room under the hood :-( (with cats - the feline variety - the hood is NOT an option!)

use plywood to make a hood that will be much better and very easy to build too and also you can make a small trap door to drop food in, thus you wouldn't have to remove the complete hood to feed your fishes
just a thought as i have all my tanks with DIY canopies made of packaging wood
