As most of you may or may not know over the fall /winter 2007 months we upgraded our aquariums to w/d trickle filters.. Now that summer is approaching let me tell you the humidity in my place has increased by over 10% with the same tanks (actually less since we sold a 60, 90 and a 55 in 2007 )when they where all on canisters...

As anyone else experienced or heard of a drastic rise in interior humidity levels in you home since you had sumps added to your filter set up to replace or run in conjunction with your canisters?

How are you dealing with your humidity levels? I just purchased a dehumidifier set it at 40% and it hasn’t turned off yet. Set up fans in the different areas to keep air flowing when the A/C hasn’t kicked in or I don‘t have it turned on.

Would covers on the W/D solve or lessen some of these issues?

Any feedback on this issue would be appreciated. how are you dealing with interior humidity?

BTW by opening the windows current relative humidity outside is 88%...

Run a dehumidifier, I use one nonstop set at 45%. It helps keep odor down as well as humidity. I remove about 4 gal of water a day in my tank room.

If the windows are open, don't run the dehumidifier, it wont do anything but waste electricity. Cross ventilation through the room and fresh air from outside should help, but if outside humidity is 88% opening the windows and running fans is going to just make the whole house 88% humid.

Any uses for the water from the dehumidfier?

I top off my tanks with it. That is where it came from and as long as there is no perfumes (air fresheners cig smoke etc) in it, it is about as pure as water can get IMO. The water came from the tanks more than likely anyhow so I just recycle it. I have been doing this for a year or longer in this house with no side effects. I never had this problem in my other houses because I lived in Florida and the A/C was on almost all year long removing the humidity.

Now beneath all this, one question remains did changing from canisters to w/d's raise the humidity in my place.....anyone? If so would a cover over the w/d be effective?

if your sump has a large uncovered surface area, it is for sure raisng the humidty in the house, uncovered equals evaporation, where i live i use a wood stove all winter long, the house is extremely dry inside, the tanks i run without full lids allow alot of moisture to evaporate in the air, solving my dryness probs
