I live in a small town, with a mini pet store inside the hardware store. they are setting up a couple of saltwater tanks. Rather than testing salinity using a hydrometer, they were told its okay to just throw mollies in and if they live, the waters fine. So, they threw 20 mollies straight from FRESHWATER into these SALTWATER tanks (with unknown salinity). I told them that they were going to kill all the mollies, and that they had to be acclimated. Their "fish expert" said "No, this is fine." By the time i saw this, all but 4 of the mollies had died. these 4 were doing very poorly. I'd assume they are all dead by now. and another batch are going in soon.

Wow, that is an impressive level of stupidity.

Animal cruelty at best. If it were kittens they were torturing and killing they would be arrested, but fish just get flushed and no one cares.

I'm definitely not buying fish from there ever again. another "practice" of theirs, is that they regularly get in dyed fish, and they keep a steady stock of those "Purple heart parrots" that have had their tails cut off.

If you aren't too far from Missouri, come here. :) We have some nice stores/fish clubs. Actually, the fish club I am a member of just had an auction this weekend, no dyed fish there! :D Haha

That is a shame though. You should buy them a hydrometer and tell them to put a little more effort into taking care of their fish.

HaHa I used mollies to cycle my 125 sw. After 2 months I got my Lion fish and he a tasty snack.

how stupid can people be..

I have found only one shop that refuses to sell dyed fish and they are an hour away in an area I rarely drive to.
I made a fuss concerning the dyed fish at the local one and then regretted it because I also tried to apply to work there and then wonder if my fuss going against me. It ever got accepted there, I'd have to sell these sickly fish to people and it would feel like fraud.

Gas money is an issue( I don't have a prius) so if the more ethical shop was local or even in an area I'd drive through, I would make more of an effort to shop there. As is I went out of my way to search for the better shop when I went through that town the next time.

Missouri is about a 4 and a half hour drive for me. A store pet at this hardware store is a blue and gold macaw. its in such poor shape and i feel bad for it. I've brought my blue and gold macaw there, and they claim the only reason my looks so much better is because he's much younger. theirs is only 7 years older than mine.
