And he'll keep growing an inch, and then another, and another, until he's the size of the 29g you're keeping him in. Then he'll get sick and die. Get a 55g ASAP.

congrats thats awesome my O would do everything but that so i give you props.

Dread. if i am not mistaking due to his current situation and space convict_breeder can only have a 29g at this point in time.

Which is more than understandable. Sometimes, you only have so much money, you're a studen, close living quarters, whatever. But then you take that x-gallon tank and make the best out of it, and get fish that can be kept for life in that tank (or have one ready for when it outgrows that tank). You can't just go out and buy whatever fish you want and stuff it into a tank that is too small for it. I wouldn't be saying anything except "Congrats, that's cool." if he had a bigger tank ready for it. But to my knowledge, a 29g is as big as he can get. Which means an Oscar, a JD, and 3 FMs are stuffed into a 29g tank for life. I find it kind of odd that when a story is told about someone who has done this, everyone can say whatever they like. But when the person doing it is on our forum, it's overlooked.

I am down with Dread on this one. He has the perfect explaination here. If you can't house the fish in anything higher than a 29 it's only common sense to give them up. The O has to go completely though. I don't recommend O's for any tanks really under 75 gallons. JD's need 55 gallons and each FM needs 20 gallons to itself. Although 29 would be an "ok" home for them but not the greatest. Sorry to spoil the excitement. So back on topic cool that the O has begun to be social. I know I was excited when my little con started doing this because normally any cons I have kept over the years hasn't done this. I have hand fed a bunch of cichlids before and trained them but this is the first con. I already have him doing loops and stuff. I am trying to teach him to ring a little bell on a plastic stick he is a little scared to touch it though but he will do it I have faith in him as he was a little reluctant to go through the loops at first but then got the hang of it.

oh i agree with you both i was just saying for this point in time. i dont know the exact measurements of his fish i am sure he plans on getting a bigger tank when they get bigger. my O started in a 5g hex and i just got rid of him because i felt bad keeping him in a 55g at 10". like i said i agree with you both and hope that cb gets a bigger tank or finds temporary homes until he can get one.

dude thats freakin amazing. i just bought an oscar and i hope one day he/she will do that!
