i'm looking for help IDing a catfish i just bought. i believe its an ompok of some sort but would like more opinions. it was marked as a gulper cat but isn't a gulper for sure. i've been eyeing it up at the store for a while now and they haven't been selling. the girl at the store said no one seems to be into the weird cats..i laughed and said the weird ugly cats are my fave. i thought it was an ompok pabda but when i got the fish home and could look at pics on the net and not rely on my memory of what the fish really looks like i'm thinking its an ompok bimaculatus.

also, does anyone know if i could put more than 1 in a tank or would they prefer to be alone.

thanks

Def. looks like an ompok, but I'm not anywhere close to good at ID'ing!

My guess would be Ompok bimaculatus. But thats merely a guess. Someone with more experience with this family of catfish might be able to help you more.

Agreed, Ompok bimaculatus. Had one a few years back ago. Bought it at a LFS labled the same, "Gulper catfish".

Hope you enjoy. They're actually a bit more active than the Wallago attu and other sheat cat sp. :)

do you still have your ompok PhullTank? how big is it and how big of a tank is it in? mine is about 3 inches but there were others at the store where i bought it from that were at least 6 inches. i've read they grow to 18 inches but i'm sure thats in the wild and not in a tank.

haha..i doubt its a wels. looks like a mini wels tho..i think thats why i like it. i keep telling my gf that when i win the lottery i'm gonna dig a moat around my house and put a wels in it to eat the local children. sorry to all you parents out there ;) but then my dreams were crushed when i actually looked into it and it turns out they're not legal to have here. plus the lack of money for a moat...

well i've had the little sucker for a few weeks now. its in a tank with a black ghost knife whos a little pushy about its territory and at feeding times. but i didn't think the ompok was getting bullied too much. i had a 10 gallon tank free up yesterday so i decided to move the ompok into it, give it some more space to move around. by the time i got back from a movie a few hours after moving it into the other tank it was a completely different fish. my tank with the black ghost knife is pretty dark, lots of plants, black abs plumbing piece for a cave and black sand. i had noticed my ompok was getting darker too, more of a mottled pattern. i took a picture of it the morning before i moved it. now after moving it, its almost white. i was so surprised. the tank its in now has brighter light and lighter gravel. its also really active, whereas in the black ghost knife tank i guess it was just blending in with the tank to hide from the ghost knife. heres some pics starting with when i got it home from the store, then when it was really dark, and now.

There are so many species around this "ompok" family. Some may grows like monster, some is dwarf. I bought two pcs similiar with your pic in LFS and they advice me that maximum length is 20 cm. On the other hand, I also saw ompok cathed by my friend when fishing in borneo where its size was as big as the angler (no its not wallago attu or leerii). And in my eyes, they are similiar.......:irked: both dwarf one and monster one.
