Is it me or do Henlei have better looking litters in captivity then if they were in the wild? Or am I crazy ???? Can Water in our Aquariums that are greatly cared for effecting the outcome of spotting and color ? I know genetics of the parents has a lot to do with it but can this be a possibility ? CURIOUS ! and has anyone ever figured out weather or not we can control the outcome of male to female pup ratio like with breeding snakes if they control the temp while the eggs are being incubated they can get either male or female does this apply to rays ? Or am I nuts :screwy::nilly::popcorn:

can we have some of the experts chime in please im very curious

sorry for the double post can a mod fix that please thanks so much

As far as better lookin pups in captivity...not sure. Some think yes, but there are some amazing wild caught specimens also.

Then the temp ranges controling male/female ratios...no one is sure. One person here tried to control the ratio with temp, didnt seem to affect M/F.
Though I do think it would be interesting if a couple of breeders would breed on opposite ends of the temp ranges and post outcomes for a few litters.

This would be a great project wouldnt it ? I was bored today and looked up some hens bred from wild hens in captivity and saw some pups looking plain and some coming out with huge spotting with same wc parents and not another in the tank but I do know that a lot of the larger spotted ones also comes from BD in the mix just wondering if it can happen without any hybrid breeding in the mix .

anyone else have any thoughts on this ?

i don't think we can control m/f ratio because of the live births....i have seen some CRAZY wild caught stuff...this male we just got in, the one that is posted in the media lounge by "tanglovers" is wild caught and is INSANE looking... every time i look at him i just say WOW....never seen anything like it... although i have never tried it.... snakes lay eggs.... just like there is no REAL way to control sexes, humans cant control if they have boys or girl... and you cant compare rays with humans but based on my experience with breeding its a crap shoot what your going to get, along with patterns and colors, there are tons of threads on here that you can look back on, and in my own experience, just in a single litter alone brother and sister can be polar opposite of each other, this is more common in hybrids, just look at vamptreves last leo/hen litter....interested too see what other people have to say.

The one thing I've allways wondered with my pups is if the outcome could be based on how many males or females I have in the tank at the time. If my tank has more males at one time is there more females from the litter and vicevera. It doesn't happen all the time but it's happened enough to make me question it. I'm lucky enough to be able to have up to 14 adult rays in my tank at once and a couple pup bins.

captive bred anything usually is nicer.i think it has alot to do with the food we feed them. and of course line breeding good genes to make real nice ones...but i am very certian that you could take two very plain looking wild hens grow them in an aquarium ,feed them all sorts of foods they are not used to and the pups they produce will more than likely be nicer than the parents :)

as for temp... we all keep our temps too high. i think lower temp can directly effect the outcome of litter size but not sex.
