I have discovered my convict layed eggs this morning or last night for the first time, and I was wondering about a few things.

1. I started with 5 convicts about 2 months ago and finally had a couple pair up and got eggs, is now the time to remove other 3 from the tank?

2. I am breeding for feeders for my jag and I have put one(for the first time) in with him and he tried his damndest to get it, but now the convict has found a hideout. The jag appeared to be breathing hard after the chase. Are there things I should be on the lookout for in this situation?

3. Are there things I should be or should not be doing for the convicts and their eggs in the other tank?

4. Is the convict that is doing the most guarding of the eggs the male or female as both of these fish are still reletively small( about inch and a half) and neither one really appears to have orange belly yet?

Bump ! I am curious if mine pair up should I remove the others ?

Remove the others and feed them to the jaguar...

The "worst" situation is a feeder con establishing a territory within a predator show tank....The coon will just keep bagering the the fins of the pred until it is eaten or taken out of the tank...

3. Are there things I should be or should not be doing for the convicts and their eggs in the other tank?

Leave the eggs to hatch....Raising spawn by feeding bbs(baby brine shrimp) 3-4 times a day will for the first 3-4 week will speed up the growth rate....

4. Is the convict that is doing the most guarding of the eggs the male or female as both of these fish are still reletively small( about inch and a half) and neither one really appears to have orange belly yet?

All female cons have obviuos color on the belly....Male snever have color...If the male has good genes, then that male should form a healthy size nuchal hump....

u proly should separate the other 3 cuz the breeding pair will get defensive and might kill the others. if u want them to breed quicker separate the fry from the parents after a week and they should breed once the fry are gone

Thanks for the replies, turns out they are not convicts , but cryptoheros sajica ( blue morph) here is a pic , and from what I understand is that they are a relative of the convict, so I would assume your advice still applies.

These fish are amazing, and i think i plan on keeping some and feeding the rest to my jag. I hope I can keep breeding these over and over as they are beautiful.

as of now I have about a dozen free swimmers.:headbang2
