What would be the best thing to use in the extra media cartridge in an emperor 400 HOB. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

i stuffed mine full of plastic pot scrubbers. did a pretty good job of upping the bio media.

I know a guy who put the media for a aqua clear and put that in and just had that and the biowheel. I don't know how good that'd work but that's what he did. I use sumps and canisters on my tanks, haven't used a hob in years

In the late 90's I worked with Cell-Pore to test and design a few products. One item I requested was a slab that fit in the Emperor 400 media slot. They created it. A few years later the company shut its doors and I lost track of them. I believe they were acquired twice. Last year while researching I was sent some info about a product. It was the same as my old design and the material looked right too. I contacted the company and they did confirm they had purchased it, and it was Cell-Pore long ago. The company that owns it now is CerMedia, they label it Marinepure. They expanded a few designs, but they kept the 280/400 media design.

It's a crispy, and sharp, ceramic foam or sponge. It doesn't hold water, it free flows beautifully. It is fragile, if you bump it wrong you'll get crumbles to fall off, drop it and it shatters. It's not goof proof like the ceramic rings and such, you don't want to put it anywhere bigger debris can clog it. I run it in the last section of my sump before the pump.

I use the new 8x8x4 block in my sump for my 150 gallon. While I'm sure that's plenty, I may add another since I have the room. The products are sold by quite a few places, I just grabbed a website that listed their items, I haven't bought mine here so no endorsements.

I remember having something similar to this years ago for all my Emperor 400's, except the cartridges had rubber on the perimeter of the media to make it slide into the slots easier. I wonder if it's the same stuff. I'll have to look online and see if I can find them again.
