I have an already established 125 gallon freshwater tank w 5 large cichlids approx 7 to 8 inches in size. The parameters are good and I have an FX5 and 2 400 emperor HOBs for filtration, and my question is I am starting up another 55 gallon freshwater and was going to move one of the emperor 400 HOBs to the 55 gallon and transfer about 30 gallons of the water out of the 125 gallon to jump start the cycling process, would this be sufficient to start adding fish right away?

Also how long after replacing the filters in a emperor 400 will there be enough beneficial bacteria to transfer to the new 55 gallon tank? Thanks for all replies

Putting a few gallons of water from the old tank is a good idea , in that it is the environment that the fish are used to ...don't change filter inserts before transfer on filter that is going to new tank for about 3(or more)weeks before move... once you have the tank filled .. the tank will be cycled, although not well established. ...don't mess with media for at least a couple of weeks. Ease into your stocking... add fish a little at a time with several days in between additions...remember if the filter is cycled the tank is also cycled....but....don't overdo it...the tank can lose cycle easy if you change media or add lots of stock...good luck..
