I have decided to switch from gravel to sand and was wondering if doing a total swap is going to remove too much of the beneficial bacteria and harm the fish. I have two HOB 's and thinking this will supply enough , but want some opinions on the best way to do this and does anyone know where to buy the small grade black spectrquartz sand? Thanks

I don't think the changeover will be a problem; maybe keep an eye out and increase the water changes a little.

No idea on the sand...

It shouldn't hurt any of the bacteria and I saw some on aquabid.com with free shipping...just remember the pound per gallon rule

I swapped out my gravel for sand in my 75 a few weeks back. I made sure not to clean my filters and I added a product called Nite Out 2 in case there was a nitrite spike. Had no issues at all.

It depends on the size of your fish stock and what your current water perams are. If your Ammo/Nitrite/Nitrate levels before water changes are higher than zero, you're at risk.

All systems are not equal. Just because it works for the next guy doesn't mean you won't have issue.

Fill a nylon with your gravel to keep in the tank for a week or two while the sand catches up. It makes no sense not to use the extra bio available.
