? on UV sterilizers for freshwater

Hey, I have a question about UV sterilizers for freshwater aquariums. I heard people say there safe and it kills aerial bacteria, and keeps the water crystal clear. Is it a necessity to have one ? What are the ups and downs of having one. I have a 125 gallon tank. Fluval FX5, and 404. I use to have a magnum canister 350 pro but i don't use it anymore. I plan on getting the EFU-45.
