Whats the one inch per gallon rule?

It's not really applicable except in certain situations. Works okay for most little fish but you have to go cubic for larger fish. A 5" cichlid is also 2" thick sometimes and 3" tall, so it's not a 5" fish, it's a 30" fish (okay, less than that because it's not a cube-shaped fish, but you get the idea.).
