i thought it was a male because it is growing faster amd is more dominate then my other two in the same tank. thay are in a 125gal. i have not vented them. i got three in hopes of a pair.
you have to remember up until 4'' females grow faster than males but i am with you it looks male my female had a much rounder body View attachment 871675
ok, thanks for the info. i am relativly new on the ca cichlids. of the three this one takes the middle of the tank and even kicks my 10" ck out of the log. then on the side closest to the log is one that it gets along with most. they will sometimes share the log. most times that one is hanging around a sponge filter on the right side and hard to get pics of. the third one is mostly disliked by the large one. they will feed together but that is it. it is mostly hiding under the sponge filter on the left side of the tank farthest from the log. it also is very shy and afraid of my lng grow out. the one pictured has no fear. it pushes my aro, ck and jags around, it leaves the gar alone though.
by what you described you have two males and a female. my friend had two males in a tank at that size and it was a total brawl he gave me two more and my female didnt bother anyone and just swam around
another way to tell is a flat or rounded belly region. see how mine is flat as can be and the top of the body is rounded. also brown spots are mainly on females

if that is the case it could be nice. i could get a pair for the 125gal to breed and a male for the gar/ pbass display. witch was the reason i got any to start with. wanted something more for the gar tank.
