is Jupiter. That planet has around 300 times the mass of earth and is the biggest planet of our solar system. Jupiter has 2.5 times more weight than all other planets combined. That huge mass gives Jupiter a very strong gravitational influence in our solar system. Jupiter forces the inner asteroids in the so called asteroid belt. That asteroid belt is structured from Jupiters gigantic gravitational pull. You cann see, that there are crowds of asteroids cramped at special lagrange points. Those points are 60° before jupiter and 60° behind him on his orbit. Another lagrange point is on the direct oppossite of his orbit:

But Jupiter doesn´t just hold the inner asteroids in check. he also stops objects from the outside (oortian cloud) from entering the inner solar system. It´s almost impossible for an object that comes from the outer solar system to pass the gatekeeper. That said, without Jupiter, we would have a chicxulub impact evry month and not evry hundred million years. Life as we know it would be impossible.

I think it´s amazing to think about those things. And last but not least here you see as a fragment of Shoemaker Levy 9 impacts with Jupiter. The explosion plume visible on this pic is several times the size of earth...

So next time when you ask yourself: "Who fights for our freedom?" You know the answer now. :D

Good to know.........

It is. When you consider those unimaginable powers you realize how small our problems and conflicts are.

Just take the Shoemaker Levy 9 impact on Jupiter. The comet fragments crashed on Jupiter and created gigantic explosions, bigger than earth.

Here you can see the still glowing impact marks and an impacts just happening:

The initial impact flash

The impact marks would have that size on earth:

That's actually intresting

I think its also fascination when you think about it, that jupiter and it's moons are like a small solar system inside the solar system and that some of it's moons could inhabit life like Europa and Ganymede. If some see that as sign for god, so be it. I think evryome can make his own approach on such topics, as long he doesn't force his opinion on others.

Got twenty bucks that says kev will close this thread in the morning

As for the original topic, maybe it wouldn't have lead to religion if the original post had directed the discussion. Again just some old news presented with a few opinions mixed in but no question, theory or argument to guide the thread. Not shocked that we're all over the place

Jupiter has always fascinated me. I remember picking it as the planet I did my research on in 5th grade and again in high school. It's moons are more interesting then some of the planets

i also choses jupiter in 5 th grade as my project :D. But Saturn also has alot to offer. If i think about Titan, Iapetus and Enceladus...soooo much to learn.

This was pretty cool and i find everything i learn about the solar system to be interesting, mainly because there is soo much out there we have yet to discover and who knows what more there could be......good topic.
