I have a 180g w. a 55g home made sump. I planned on using a mag drive 12 as a return pump. My question is: are there any benefits or problems with using two pumps instead of one.I have access to two mag drive 7's and was thinking about using them instead. From my point of viewI would be able one pump if one was to go down. Would the flows be similar in the one vs. two scenario? there will be about a 5ft head height. Thanks.

More circulation and more filtration with two pumps compared to one.

Would the flows be similar in the one vs. two scenario?
Could you please run this by me again? I am confused.

2 mag 7's will give you roughly 840 gph at 5' head vs 1120 gph for the mag 12. IMO sumps don't need that much flow anyway, 3-5x is good enough, so I think you should just go with the 2 mag 7's. Plus 2 pumps will give you peace of mind because you know even if one pump fails you won't be left filterless.

If you're going to have a heavy bio-load go with the Mag 12 as it is only going to give you 6x turnover (if you can p/u one of the Mag 7's as a backup that would be a plus).
