Really depends. For some tanks, maybe. If the fish have the same requirements for water parameters it can work. If the needs of the fish vary greatly then it is not ideal.
With multiple tanks to one sump it is also fairly easy for any pathogens to move between the tanks leading to infection of many more fish.
This really depends what fish you're working with.
