So i just got back from Georgia and took a trip to the Georgia Aquarium while i was there. Couldnt find any recent pics on MFK so here they are
. Also here are some behind the scenes photos and videos.
Heres the aquarium from the outside. Absolutely beautiful building (its boat shaped too).
A few pics from the freshwater section of the aquarium. Not very large compared to SW, not surprised.
Heres a pic of the reef tank
And finally... heres Ocean Voyager, the largest aquarium in the world!!! 6.3 MILLION gallons large and home to 4 whale sharks, 4 manta rays, and countless other sharks, rays, groupers, and other fish from oceans all over the world.
Heres the main walkway through the tank
A manta and a whale shark
Here are some shots from the viewing window which is one of the largest in the world (3rd largest i believe)
Some shots from the behind the scenes tour!
This is above the GB reef tank
In the foreground is a small lagoon which is connected to the main reef tank but doesnt allow fish through. This lagoon is where the little reef fish are grown out before they are added to the main tank.
50 thousand watts of Metal Halide lighting + skylights for the reef.
Coral frags. the largest aquarium in the world aquacultures coral too!
Zebra Shark captive breeding. These egg cases are found in the main ocean voyager exhibit where divers collect them and put them in this lagoon to hatch.
Just a small section of the 70+ miles of piping in the worlds largest aquarium
Heres a pic of the HUGE filtration system found under Ocean Voyager. I couldnt get a picture of all of it, it quite literally spanned hundreds of feet in every direction.
Fish OR number one
Here are the labs where they do tens of thousands of water chemistry tests weekly. Also here they do pathology and research with aquariums all over the world. Hematology and cytology are done here as well. The lab is a bit bigger than the pics show but i didnt want to flood the forums with pics (tried very very hard haha)
Captive bred african penguin babies
and once again back to ocean voyager. here you can see how truly massive this tank is... there are 3 places to view the tank in the aquarium, and you can not see any other viewing windows from each of the windows.
here a manta ray decided to jump out of the water right in front of us. Pretty cool. happened pretty fast and my ipads camera isnt too greath though so its kinda hard to see.
And here is how they feed the monsters! They have to feed them individually because they are too slow for all of the smaller fish!
and here are two videos of the staff feeding the whale sharks
