I am just about ready to order my starter fish for a 90 gal. The tank finally finished the cycle. I will probably be orderring appox. 25-30 fish. My local lfs wants 21.99 each for mixed 1" fish. I think I can do better online. Any suggestions will be helpful.

how big is your tank? even for a 200g 25-30 new fish at once is pushing it

definitely do not put in more than 3 or 4 fish at a time. 5 is pushing it. 25-30 will be dead in a few days

Not too sure about how many fish to put in at once. I put (7) 2 inch mbuna in my 75 gallon and they are all doing great. I have (3) tanks so when I move fish around I always move some water also to keep the fish in the same water conditions from the get go.

As far as $22 a fish that is crazy. My lfs sells authentic pure fish at about $6 a pop when they are around the 1 1/2 or 2 inch mark. Mixed cichlids sell for much cheaper than that...

Good luck and let's see some pics of your tank.

I cycled my tank with 4ppm of ammonia fishless cycle so I could add more fish from the start. These fish will be small. I was using the number as an example of the number of fish I will be ordering. All these fish will not be going in one tank. I need to add some catfish and plecos to another tank I have. The new tank is a 90 gal.

I did have some Columbia Sharks (catfish) but unfortunately they had a hard time surviving due to my Africans eating everything before it gets to the bottom.

What do you have in your tank w/ cats and placos?

If you cycled with enough ammonia you should be fine adding the fish. Bluegrass cichlids sells malawis starting at $4 each, and you would save some money by ordering alot at one time. He also has starter packages in which you can get fish at $3 each. Just make sure you monitor the paramaters closely when you add the fish. It's a little risky, but if careful you can make it work. As a precaution you could also boost your bacteria with a starter like seachem stability.

22 bucks for a single fish is a rip off. Like everyone has already said, adding to many fish too quickly may result in spikes and rapid flutuactions is your parms. Watch closely, or just add small groups of fish, wait a few weeks and add some more.
