So I am currently running large sponge filters in my tanks along with other filtration (AC110s for one tank, and Fluval U4 for the other), but I was wondering for a smaller tank if it's possible to get by on just sponge filters? I know it's a dumb question and theoretically I can see it working, just never seen it done before.

Yes, you can run tanks, small and big, on solely sponge filters. The only thing lacking would be mechanical filtration, which can be remedied with water change and vacuuming

I run all 32 of my fish room tanks using only sponge filters. No issues here.

Awesome! There is a thread on sponge filters I love them. I have them in my smaller tanks just on sponges. I love them if my tank didn't already have a built in dual over flow with plumbing and a sump I would've just done sponge filters. That tank still has sponge filters though.

Thanks for the responses guys!

If your water parameters are good, your bio filtration is good, be it sponge, hob, sump, cannister or whatever combo...
