I have an Ultima and a sump both filled with K1, both work as fluidized beds and I can assure you, it does not remove Nitrates. These things are amazing at removing ammonia and Nitrite, I can throw 5x the daily amount of food in the tank and the K1 handles the ammonia and nitrite with ease. But it is basically a nitrate factory. My Nitrates run about 20-30ppm with a 50% water change every week. I recently purchased a sulfur denitrator to help lower the nitrate levels but haven't hooked it up yet.
