I was thinking about buying a new minnow trap today but I wanted to see how big the opening to my old one was. Well, I looked for it... it's not there!! Then I remembered that I left my minnow trap at the river LAST YEAR. Well, I thought that maybe the Department of Parks and Recreation removed it already, but when I walked down to the river, there it was! The rope was hidden among poison ivy! (Maybe thats why it's still there :naughty: )

I pulled it up, smashed it through the ice and what do I find?? 13 of these guys! They looked like they entered only a couple hours ago (they didn't look hungry and they were all alive)

Well, I took them home (one died :(). I took a 54 gallon rubbermaid storage bin and turned it into a makeshift pond.

What kind of shiner do you think it is?? I'm guessing Golden Shiner (Notemigonus crysoleucas)

the fish in the picture is a little washed out. When I took them out, they had yellowish/orange fins and the body had a rainbowy metallic sheen.

Golden shiner - NEAT story. Probably leftovers from icefishing

Heh, golden shiners are native to my area. Maybe they went in because they wanted to...

As far as I know, no one ice fishes on the Charles River... (it never ices up thick enough because there are bridges everywhere and the places under the bridges almost never freeze) Maybe they were running away from a very hungry largemouth bass :P

Golden shiners. What do you plan on doing with them? Personally I think they make decent dither/target fish like silver dollers and tinfoil barbs.
