Ironic because I posted today that my bichir taught him a lesson and he was going to work out....

I bought an Opaline Gourami thinking I knew what I was doing. I wanted a small peaceful fish and went with several species in mind. One of them being a gourami. Problem was I'd read the bio on a few of them and didn't realize there'd be such differation between the subsepecies. I picked the color gourami I thought looked the best. Lesson learned Opalines are mean - males at least I read after the fact that the females are better. He kept bullying my young bichir and finnaly (about 5 min ago) I had enough. I really like my bichir and im not going to have him killed by a gourami. Taking him back wasnt an option so I put him down. The method went well and he died instantly.

I dont like killing fish - especially because of a mistake I made. It wasnt the Gourmi's fault. :(:(:(

Euthanizing fish is never easy. I'm sorry to hear you had to choose that option. Gouramis general are good community fish but it can also be a bully if the bichirs is really small.

I have two opaline gourami's in my tank, and the male tends to chase around the other fish (2 platies and an angelfish) if they get near the female. He also continually chases the female 'round the tank. I transfered her to my tank after she was injured in my dads larger tank, which contains oscar cichlids and various african cichlids. Funny thing is, the most aggressive and violent fish in the cichlid tank is the smallest. You could say he runs the tank, as he continually bashes the MUCH larger oscars into the walls of the tank. he's a mean little bastard. this is him

damn i knew gouramis where mean suckers (i had a dwarf one go toe to toe with a 4 inch male krib, the krib came off worse).

I personally dont think putting it down was a good idea, considering it was your own lack of research that caused its demise.

Also your bichir needs to man up lol.

i guess i been real lucky with mine. i have him in with several other fishes and he never bother them. however my rainbow shark will chase him out of his favorite rock lol

You used the file name of your computer and that will not automatically work on this site as image codes. Photobucket is another alternative.

I've never hand any problems with mine they get along very well with my other fish.

You've gotta be kidding me....
You put down this poor fish because you didn't want to bring it back? I'm sure any LFS would take a gourami for free. I've bought fish and returned them for free. I didn't kill the thing because I was stupid and bought too aggressive of a fish.
Ever heard of a divider? To possibly temporarily separate your fish until you could return it?
