open top tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would be hesitant for an open top tank for any fish. I've had a few fish that weren't suppose to be jumpers end up on the floor, luckily only one fatality though :). If you don't want an actual canopy you can custom cut some egg crate. That's what I use, not as aesthetically pleasing but it keeps any frisky fish in the tank.

I wouldn't do it. If they get spooked just once, have a little scuffle, or one happens to jump too high and you're not around.. Bye-Bye Fishy. :(

ok thanks im geting tired of those plastic lids and i was going to try something diffrent ill just get a glass one.

Another issue the some don't think about is the increase in evaporation due to there being no lid on the tank. You will probably notice a need to top off your tank almost daily because of the evaporation going on in the tank. The bigger the footprint, the more evaportion that happens.

ok thanks i was woundering about that

You can but always remember you can run the risk of him jumping out. I currently have my 200 gallon open. But I have the light strips position to limit them jumping out.

My 120 gallon is currently open top and a nightmare. The evaporation is so a PITA. I have to top off every day/other day in the summer and at least 2-3 times per week during the winter. I just redid the stock in that tank today so will be adding lids tomorrow.. And I could not be happier about it lol..

My 300 is half and half. Center is covered but the sides are open. I have some evaporation but I built my sump to handle the drop. I can make it to my next water change without having to add water.

Every now and again when they get a little rowdy I'll throw the sides back on.
