I am building a tank that I will be leaving the top open. It will be eurobraced. I will have the water level about 6" from the rim. Do you guys think Bichirs will still leave the tank? My feeling is, they just come up for air, and sometimes torpedo themselves out of a tank, but unless they were to actually jump, they wouldn't leave this setup. Opinions, please........

they will jump. all it takes is for the bichir to get spooked. I had this happen during feeding time when one of the bichirs bit the fin of the other. The tank water level was low but the bichir still hit the cover pretty hard

I agree. You probably wont have a problem for a while but the ije time one gets spooked it's coming out. I had some albino senegals in a river tank in my classroom. Only about 12 inches of water and when fighting over food I saw one jump up two levels which was a 6 inch rise. Keep in mind these were only about 6 inches long themselves. I would hat to lose a fish because I chose not to cover the tank.

That settles that, I guess. The tank is 72X72" with bracing coming in 6". My thought (wish) was that unless they jumped like an Aro they wouldn't become a mummy on the floor. :(
