I'd like to do an open top tank. My stand is only 21 inches tall, and the tank is 24inches tall. so i am able to view my ray from the top with ease. like an indoor pond sort of thing. it will also be a bare bottom tank. I am wondering if there would be any issues i might run into with an open top tank. Like will the ray jump out, heat loss, hummidity and poisoning(from smoke, fumes, ect...)

Ambient room temp will be anywhere from 72-75f, and tank temp will be 78-82f. I will be using twin hydor inline heaters for better heat distribution. Tank size is only 112 gallons. filtration is a 30gal wet/dry. tank residents are one 4 inch disc retic, and a school of neons(feeders) . the room it is in is 160 square feet.

any thoughts/recommendations???

i dont know about rays jumping but hummidity would be an issue and you heaters will have to work more dur to heat loss (only a prblem to the wallet) poisoning would only ocure if the was something dragging fumes into tank but carbon in the filter system would help with this

you want to put a lip on the tank to keep the ray from jumping out as well as splashing water out onto to the floor. Instead of bare bottom consider tiling, till look better IMO. as mentioned before you will loose a lot of heat unless the room is kept in the 70's year round, also of course evap/humidity will be an issue if there is a temp gradient from tank to room. LASTLY, the RAY will EAT the NEONS :).

Your cost to heat will at least triple, your tank water will end up heating your house also. Humidity will be a big issue in winter ( areas around your doors and windows will either collect water or ice up). Your ray can jump out without a lid, lip or lower water level. That said, to me you have more interaction with a ray in a pond enviorment it seems.
