Just wondering when you start your own fish store, or any store for that matter, how do you get the supplies. For example you would like to sell Eheim, Fluval, and XP filters; do you call up the company and work out a deal with them or what? Would one company put special rules, for example "if you want to sell Eheim filters you are not allowed to sell XP filters in your stores for competition reasons"?

You would probly go through a distributor who you will buy all your supplies from. A company will make no money selling two xp3's to joe's pet store. The distributor will probly buy thousands of them and distribute them to all the joe's pet store.

That might be a good possibility I know in FL most people do all their products through wholesalers thats fish and supplies. Few of them do go through the company but they tend to carry huge selection in that brand and a small selection in the other thats all I know from being around them and talking with people I dunno the details. I am sure if you talk to the company though you can come up with a oh you buy so many I give it to you for this much thing but I dont know if thats becuase of competition but it seems like it. A store petsupermarket we have down here carries alot of brands in all kinds of fish products/filters/aquariums/foods etc. you can prob find like four+ different brands in everything. I like the variety and selection. I think they go through wholeslaers but then again a majority has lifetime gurantee through the actually company =) thats nice also, but you have to send it in bleh. Ne who hope that helps you out some even though ur not here.

What you have to do is prove you have a store front and then most of the wholesalers will sell to you. The one I buy from asks for you to spend at least $100 on each order and a lot of times they want you to have an initial purchase of a few thousand dollars.

If you don't have a store front, is there a way to be recognized as one? I have a contact but he won't sell to me b/c I don't have a store front.

I am an inside sales rep for a pet supply distributer in Wisconsin...We also check to see if the account has a store front, but sometimes they run an aquarium maintence service out of there home...Then we only let them order and pick up at our warehouses, most of the time they pay with cash or check and they have no order minimums.....Hope this gives you some insight....
