I have two halfed very large fake rocks up against the back of my tank 300 gal glass. I am siliconing them to the back and bottom of the tank, I need to make a pinhole at the top so when I fill the tank the air can come out of the hollow rocks. That would be the only opening to the rest of the water. My question is will the water inside the rock become poluted and cause problems later ??????????????? Do I need to make a half inch hole and cover it so I can suck the water out from the hollow rock during some water changes. Can I plug the pinhole after filling so there will be no water exchange between the tank and hollow part of the huge rocks??? Is that the best idea????????

first I would upgrade to a 3/16 hole rather then a pin hole. I would also put a few hole through out the rocks to help promote water movement preventing any stagnant water, and at 3/16 the holes wont be very noticeable.

I would suggest cutting out half moons on either side of the rocks. Stick a powerhead in each and then you won't have to worry about water movement at all. Just get some cheapy p/heads.

I agree, stagnant water behind the rock could eventually cause a problem.Fill it up and seal it

i also would add some decent sized holes on the side so you can get some water movement in there along with some in the top, you can cover these with plants or somethind.
i have only got 9 years fishkeeping experience so what do i know.

Howdy,

First off: You offend most of our members by assuming they do not know what they are talking about. Don't do that.

Second: Seniority does not seem to be the key to knowledge: You have been a member since Aug 2007, yet, you posted in the wrong forum. I moved it for you.

Third: Stagnant water is never good. There are good answers posted. I personally think DiXoN is right on, although he's admittedly a newbie.

Yes, the water will become stagnant , and possibly grow some algae before it too dies, further poisoning (rancid) the water.

Is the purpose to just fill the space?

If you can seal it water tight, sand will work great.

You can also fill the backs with GreatStuff spray foam. (after it is sealed in place buoyancy won't be a problem).

Any kind of small holes for circulation (outside of using a pump to move the water) will just fill up with detritus and cause the above problems.

And if you need to see my credentials, you'll have to come here to view the Stone Tablets yourself :D.

Oh, and try not to hurt the Kids feelers next time, their a good (sensitive tho) bunch.

Assuming you are just trying to take up space.......why not use real wood and just prop it against the back of the tank.

I attempted the very feat you speak of (siliconing, sealing) for purposes of keeping Periophthalmus (mudskipper). It worked for a while but I soon learned the benefits of allowing water to move through the fake wood/stone.

Uneaten foods and detritus accumulated within the structures (b/c the silicone eventually allowed water to leak through)

I had to drill holes to remove the waste and decided to make the holes large enough for water and "mollie-sized" fish to swim through.

I found that if I tied Java moss to the structures in strategic locals I could mask the presence of the pass through holes, allow water to flow and fish to swim. Waste/detritus ceased to gather there. All was good.
Respectfully. FM
