Hello all, I'm 30 days into this hobby and waiting for my new 150g to cycle up. As I sit here bored to death I'm already thinking of another tank. I've gone through a majority of the posts here regarding filtration and it seems the populous have Eheim filters. In my haste of acquiring my tank I picked up 2 Fluval fx6's. I have to say , so far they are wonderful. They were super easy to set up and are really quiet. With that said, I'm trying to convince myself to set up the new one with Eheims to be with the cool kids. Are Eheims that great or should I get another round of Fluvals? I'm thinking a new 300g with 3 Eheim Pro 3 XL's. BTW, I'm not too interested in Sumps- seems messy.

Thoughts?

I have an FX6 and two Eheim classic 600s on my 150. Honestly I have no issues with either. One eheim has been running maintenance free for 6 years the other 4. The FX6 I have had for little over a year and works perfectly. I do believe the FX6 is a great filter for the $$ but I can’t say a negative word about either.

Eheim guys all seem happy with their Eheims, FX guys all seem happy with their FXs. I'm an FX guy for a decade now, and while I wouldn't turn down an Eheim if it was given to me, I don't really feel compelled to switch ?‍♂️

I’ve always been an eheim guy. But FXs are cool as well. Having said that I recommend researching into sumps more. They’re the most versatile and the best for larger tanks. You can do so many things in a sump based filtration system that you can’t do (as easily) with a canister only setup:
- wanna prevent fish from getting burned up from the heater? Put the heater in the sump.
-wanna dose some meds and have it mix evenly?Dump it in the return section of the sump and the pump will take care of dispersing it.
- don’t like bubbles in the main tank? Put the bubbler in the sump.
Just a few use cases wherein a sump is better than a canister. I ran eheims on a 240 for a couple of years before setting up a sumped system and IME canisters are way more messier than sumps.

Agreed! Also sumps are way easier to do mantanience on then canisters. When you say they seem messy are you stating while they are running like aesthetically messy or during mantanience? Because just like your canisters a sump can look as cool or as messy as you make it. For maintaning way less messy.

Great advice guys. I've seen some pics of 1 sump along with 2 canisters. That might be the route I go as soon as I research and do a "how to sump for dummies". I enjoy the SET UP part of the hobby, haven't got to the fish /care yet. I don't mind spending the money just trying to make the best choices. Thank you

Ok, I took some advice and then I went crazy. All my filtration components are now purchased. But I have no tank or stand. I picked up 2 Fluval Fx6's (petsmart running a deal at $249 from $339) and wait for it....... I bought a wet/dry sump (Proclear P300) So massive filtration. Now what?

Drew up a sketch to weld a stand then wrap with oak. Found a TruVue tank for under 3k.
Going to hook up the Neptune system on a freshwater tank, should be fun.

Waiting for a tank to cycle is costing me more then expected. Geez

That sounds good. One simple question. Why didnt you pick up like an used 120 or 150gallon tank and made a sump out of it?:) i would almost certainly be cheaper then buying an factory made sump?:)
