I'm looking into buying a canister filter, please bare with me as i don't know jack about them. Im looking into a MarineLand Magnum 350, it's rated for 100 gallons and i will be using it on a 55 gallon tank along with an undergravel filter. Is this descent for my use, or is it absolute trash? If you can recommend one can you post a link for it, or please describe exactly how they work and why are they better than a HOB filter. Also, will this aerate my water like an HOB or will I have to have a different oxygen source?

Here's the link http://www.marineland.com/products/consumer/con_magnum.asp

Thanks,
Jimmy

A mag350 with the micron cartridge would be good for polishing with use of a UGF for biological filtration.

No it won't really aerate the water like a HOB, you will need to point the outflow at the surface to get some more oxygen in the water if you want to use the canister filter for that.

What kind of fish are you going to have in there?

the 350 magnums a good canister imo -i have 2 at the momment. my reccomendation is get that but, ditch the undergravel filter- they do nothing for aquarium filtration. it will not aerate like hobs do to the fact that the return pipeing does not make the same kind of contact with the water that HOB's do so i would keep a HOB on there with the 350 aswell.

There are many different choices out there for canisters. The Magnum's are not as good as many other canisters. Canisters are closed systems that force water through medias. They can sustain much larger quantities of fish, while still converting ammonia to nitrate quickly. For a 55 gallon tank that was well stocked, I'd recommend the Eheim 2217, as they are very well built, last a long time, and can support a good amount of media.

UGF can be extremely effective filters. When run reverse flow, they can keep a tank with a substrate far healthier than one without a UGF.

just talking fom my own experiences and i've own a few, and i've seen no difference in tanks with large UGF to tanks without them and the same sort of other filtration and stocklist, i really don't understand how they can do any help at all.

i've never run reverse flow Btw.

I guessive changed my mind on that one in particular mainly because i just noticed its only mechanical and chemical filtration, not biological also. As for stock I'll have my Oscar, 4 line pictus cat, and a caecilian worm eel. Any more ideas or comments are appreciated!

Rena XP3 has my vote too... They can be had for $105 off Petsmarts site with free shipping or you could print the page off and take it there and they will pricematch it...Last time I was in Petsmart the instore price for one was $179...so you can save alot of $$$ by getting it online or pricematching online price in the store.
