I'm thinking of switching from one 300w to two 150's in my 80 gal, my thought is if you were to loose one you would have some kind of back up. in the winter I keep my house at 62 deg during the day when i'm working, so it's just a piece of mind when I have so much tied up in my fish. What do you all think?

I have backup heaters on ALL my tanks, go for it!!!

If it ain't broken...

The way you run 2 heaters is by putting the temp of the backup slightly below the other. Since it will be half of the wattage the one working all the time will get a load of use so it's not uncommon for it to fail, but some would use that as reasoning that heaters will fail anyway when in fact it is being stressed.

This is just my opinion.

I switched from one 300W to two 200W's on my 6x2x2, and haven't looked back since. Well worth it IMO.

2 heaters is the way to go imo. Placed opposite ends of the tank i feel it allows for more even heat distribution. Also if the heater fails closed it's less likely to cook your fish.

no matter what size tank you have i always have 2 heaters...imagine you go out and one breaks down? imo def get 2...better be safe than sorry

depends where your tank is imo. i run one but my tank is in my living room so the room is always warm which means my heater is never taxed too much. if your tanks were in a basement or garage for example, then you may need to run 2 to spread the load on cold days.
